Sunday Lunch with Battlement Tour

If you enjoy history and love food, then make sure you book one of our special Sunday Lunch with Battlement Tour dates.

This is part of Langley’s preparations for the very first ‘Northumberland Day’, which it has championed for nearly two years and which will take place on Sunday May 28th

The dates for these special lunches will be:

Sunday 9th April & Sunday 7th May 2017

There will be three tours taking place on both of the days, each lasting half an hour.

The first 15 minutes will be a short architectural tour whilst heading to the battlements, here you will have the opportunity to take some photographs and take in the breathtaking views. 

This will be followed by a 15 minute video presentation in the Chapel, which gives an insight into the history of Langley Castle over the centuries.

Normally there would be a charge of £4.95 per attendee, however this will be offered, with our compliments for those of you having Sunday Lunch with us on these dates.

You can choose to do the tour before or after your lunch booking.

The tours will take place at the following times:

11.30 a.m. until 12.00 p.m.

12.30 p.m. until 13.00 p.m.

13.30 p.m. until 14.00 p.m.

The tours will start promptly at the time specified.

Northumberland Day - Sunday May 28th 2017

Langley Castle has been at the heart of the Northumberland landscape for over 650 years, but could now be playing one of its most decisive parts in the county’s history and economy.

This is thanks to us devising the idea of a dedicated ‘Northumberland Day’ – a day in the annual calendar, when residents and businesses in Northumberland all celebrate what is best about the county. Alternatively, if the public decide, this could become a week or fortnight-long celebration.

Langley Castle first put out the call for a Northumberland Day on July 8, 2015 and has since generated extensive publicity in north east print media, as well as on BBC Radio Newcastle. We have already interested TV stations too and have received messages of support from Councillor Val Tyler at Northumberland County Council and Northumberland Tourism – who were approached by the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, in response to our launch of the concept.

When we realised that this concept had never been mooted before, we felt well placed to make this call. Langley, was once owned by Cadwallader John Bates, a former Sheriff of Northumberland, whilst current owner, Dr Stuart Madnick, has played his own part in Northumberland’s history by getting the titles of Baron of Langley and Lord of the Manor of Langley back from the Crown, following their sequestration after Langley’s part in the attempt to put Bonnie Prince Charlie back on the throne.

The vision that we have devised and are championing and driving is one that encompasses a celebration of the county’s heritage, tradition, myths and legends, food and drink, landscape and tourism attractions. It is about generating civic pride in what Northumberland has to offer – to both its residents and to those who visit this beautiful county. It is geared towards making businesses feel buoyant and giving tourism a special boost on what could be, not just one day, but a week of special events and activities.

We only have to look at Yorkshire and Lancashire to see how such days can work, whilst examples such as Murcia Day, in Spain, are inspiring templates to follow, if we wish to reach out to all communities and businesses.

Northumberland Day 2017 is already beginning to take shape following the announcement by the originators of the idea, Langley Castle, and its committed steering group, that the county’s first dedicated day will be held on Sunday May 28 2017.

Northumbrians across the county have already responded to the news.  Enquiries about how to get involved have been received from local organisations, including the U3A network, whilst activity is already being planned by Hexham Racecourse, The Pudding Parlour’s stores and Ford and Etal Estates.

Some dynamic individuals have already created events.  An all-day ‘Northumberland Rocks’ event has already been arranged for Sunday May 28 at the Whitehouse Unique Social Club in Ashington.  The event will feature Northumberland-based bands, four of which have already confirmed to organiser, John Emery.

Additionally, a message of support, and desire to get involved at Alnwick Castle, has been received from the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. 

The County Show, taking place the day after Northumberland Day, has been part of the planning committee and is an enthusiastic supporter of the idea.

Jane Hunt, managing director of Catapult PR – the agency which suggested the idea of Northumberland Day to its client Langley Castle – has this week presented the concept to the Hadrian’s Wall Tourism Association, whose members are considering ways in which they can also take part and promote Northumberland Day via their websites and communications and through local food and drink promotion.

Additionally, Jane has received a ‘Song for Northumberland’ by Doctor Keith Armstrong, a published poet and poetry performer and the coordinator of the Northern Voices Community Projects creative writing and community publishing enterprise.  His work has appeared in publications such as the New Statesman and Poetry Review and he has kindly allowed his ‘Song for Northumberland’ to be used as part of the promotion for Northumberland Day, also offering to perform it.

Details of Northumberland Day have been presented to the Kielder Business Forum, by Natalie Wood, Business Relationships Manager at Northumberland Tourism.

“I think it’s fair to say that we are already seeing momentum behind this exciting concept,” says Langley Castle Hotel and Restaurant’s owner, Dr Stuart Madnick.  We have been delighted by the response we have received in the last two weeks, since we announced the date.  Now is the time for everyone to start planning what they are going to do on Northumberland Day, or in the week around Northumberland Day, and get plans in place and, as importantly, in calendars and diaries, as well as on websites and email footers.

“We would urge all towns, villages and communities to get involved.  If you love your county, don’t let your community be embarrassed by not having demonstrated that.  We wish to see Northumberland turned yellow and red for the week of Northumberland Day and send out a signal to the rest of the UK that Northumbrians are immensely proud of the place in which they live and work.”

Businesses, organisations and individuals wishing to be part of Northumberland Day can start by using the Northumberland Day logo on their websites and correspondence.  Logo and letterhead designs have been created by Northumberland Tourism and are available at http://www.northumberlandtourism.org.uk/news-room/710-new-northumberland-day  

Any tourism-focused events being planned in support of Northumberland Day – which can take place on any date in the period around May 28 2017 and not just on the day itself – will be uploaded to the Northumberland Tourism website.

Jane is also planning some Northumberland Day drop-in sessions, at which she will speak to anyone interested in finding out more.  She will be announcing the dates and venues for those soon. 

She also explains: “We would be really grateful to any design studio who would be willing to create an online home for all our Northumberland Day news and updates, on a pro-bono basis.  We, unfortunately, do not have any funding for Northumberland Day at present, so myself and others within our group are giving our time to this for free and hope that a web designer may be happy to do the same.

“We would also like to create at least one big centrepiece for Northumberland Day, or a series of events, so would be delighted to hear from any corporate sponsors wishing to lend its support to this exciting date in the county’s calendar. Our message to potential sponsors is, ‘Do you love Northumberland enough?’  If you do, please show it.”
